About Korean (quick guide)

Dialects

Standard Korean, based on the Seoul dialect, is used almost universally by Korean speakers in the U.S., nearly all of whom trace their origin to South Korea. Regional dialects such as Jeju or Gyeongsang exist but rarely affect clinical interpretation, since most speakers shift to the standard form in formal settings.

Language family

Korean is classified as a language isolate, sometimes described as the sole member of the Koreanic family. It has no close structural relationship to Japanese or Chinese, despite historical vocabulary borrowing from Chinese.

Script

Korean is written in Hangul, a phonetic alphabet in which each syllable block combines consonant and vowel sounds. Formality and honorific speech levels are built into Korean grammar, and using the correct level of respect matters in clinical conversations, especially with older patients.

U.S. care settings

Common encounter hubs include California, New York, New Jersey, Virginia and the Washington D.C. metro area.
